Darren Musselwhite is a founding partner of Musselwhite & Michel Insurance. He has been a licensed agent in Mississippi and Tennessee since starting his insurance career with Shelter Insurance in May, 1992 at his Southaven agency. With Shelter, he was one of the top producers in Mississippi for many years; qualified for 10 sales incentive trips recognizing the top producers in Shelter’s 14-state operation; was inducted into Shelter’s “Conference of Champions Hall of Fame” in 2004; and qualified for Shelter’s “Partner in Profit” designation for consistency in profitable underwriting. His agency was known for providing outstanding customer service evidenced by customer retention ratios consistently around 90%. He represented Shelter his entire insurance career until November, 2017. Darren is currently serving in his fourth term as Mayor of Southaven. He currently serves on the Mississippi Municipal League Board of Directors and as Vice Chairman of the Board with the Mid-South Development District. He was named the Southaven Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” in 2017 and Desoto Times-Tribune’s “Desoto’s Best Mayor” in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2025. Before insurance and politics, Darren spent 3 years playing professional baseball for minor-league affiliates of the Minnesota Twins and San Francisco Giants after being drafted in the 1989 MLB Draft following his junior season at Ole Miss. During his career at Ole Miss, he was named the Rebels’ Most Valuable Pitcher in 1988 after posting a 10-win season and joining only 5 other SEC pitchers that season to be named “SEC Pitcher of the Week”. He was named “Freshman of the Year” for Ole Miss in 1987 and the Connie Mack Baseball “Player of the Year” for the state of Mississippi in 1985. Darren graduated from Ole Miss in 1989 receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in Managerial Finance. He received his Life Underwriters Training Council Fellow designation in 1995 after professional studies of providing insurance solutions for various client needs. Darren has been married to the former Laurie Honeycutt since 1998 and they have three sons, Reid (Ayla), Ryan and Drew and two granddaughters, Jordan and Brooklyn. They reside in Southaven. Matthew Michel is a founding partner of Musselwhite & Michel Insurance and brings a wealth of insurance knowledge and experience to serve our clients. He has been a licensed agent in Mississippi and Tennessee since 1992 when he started his full-time insurance career with Shelter Insurance at his Memphis agency. With Shelter, Matthew consistently led the Tennessee agency force in production attending numerous sales incentive trips recognizing the top producers nationally and was recognized in 1997 as the #2 life insurance producer for the entire 14-state operation. In 2002, he contracted with Farmers Insurance where he was awarded “Agent of the Year” for the state of Tennessee in his first full year. He represented Farmers until going completely independent with his Memphis operation in 2009. Matthew graduated from Delta State University in 1992 receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration degree majoring in Insurance and Real Estate. He received his Life Underwriters Training Council Fellow designation in 1995 after professional studies of providing insurance solutions for various client needs. Matthew is married to the former Missy Cain since 1996 and they have two sons, Luke (Madisyn) and Logan and grandson, Leland. They reside in Nesbit, Mississippi. Cheryl Bass joined Musselwhite & Michel Insurance immediately upon inception of the business after having worked for one year with First Reliable Insurance Agency and ten years with the Musselwhite Insurance Agency, who represented Shelter Insurance. She began her insurance career with Oaks Insurance Agency in Southaven in 1988 and worked in that agency until 2007. She is a licensed agent in Mississippi and Tennessee for all property/casualty and life insurance products. She also serves as Policy Service Administrator for the agency overseeing all general policy and claims service. Her experience in understanding the challenges and opportunities of both the captive, one- company and the independent, multi-company marketplaces is invaluable for clients. Many policyholders in Southaven, Desoto County, and the entire metro area will also speak to the incredible level of customer service they have received from Cheryl over the years. She has a special talent of personally relating to clients’ needs and solving their problems as if they were her own. She is a talented insurance professional and tremendous asset for the agency.
